The graduate program in education leads to a master of arts or a master of science degree and offers four concentrations: Early childhood education (PK-4), Middle level education (4th -8th grade), General education (which includes secondary education content areas- 9th-12th grade), and special education. In the state of PA, special education must now be an add on or dual certification. It can no longer stand alone. Candidates can pursue teacher certification in an area while completing the master?s degree. Most certification courses also count towards the degree if students wish to continue on.

For students who currently hold teacher certification, the master?s program at Albright offers an individualized way of completing a master?s degree in a small college setting that allows for a more personal form of academic expression among one?s peers and instructors. Also, building upon and continuing Albright?s interdisciplinary arts tradition, the master?s degree includes a liberal arts strand of three courses.

The program of study includes 12 core credit hours, 15 credit hours in a selected concentration strand, 9 credit hours in liberal arts study, and 3 to 9 credit hours in research and/or internship. The degree program requires 39-42 credits depending on capstone track. Students have the option of doing a thesis or doing a comprehensive exam plus one additional elective. Each student will progress through the master?s program at his/her own pace. A full-time student (minimum 9 credits per term) will be able to complete the master?s degree in a two-year time period. A student taking one or two courses a semester on a part-time basis can complete the degree in three to four years. Students fulfilling teacher certification requirements while also working towards a master?s degree will be following a more individualized program than a candidate who currently holds a teaching certification or isn?t interested in teacher certification. The time to complete both certification and the master?s degree will vary depending upon each student?s educational background and concentration.

Founded in 1856, Albright College is a nationally ranked, private college with a rigorous liberal arts curriculum with an interdisciplinary focus. The College?s hallmarks are connecting fields of learning, collaborative teaching and learning, and a flexible curriculum that allows students to create an individualized education. Albright College enrolls some 1,500 undergraduates in traditional programs, and another 500 students in accelerated degree and graduate programs. Albright College is located in Reading, Pennsylvania, about 60 miles from Philadelphia.
