Brooklyn College is widely regarded as one of the best public urban colleges in the United States. For more than seventy years, the Division of Graduate Studies at Brooklyn College has provided outstanding graduate education at reasonable cost. The division offers more than sixty programs leading to master?s degrees and advanced certificates, and participates in more than thirty CUNY doctoral programs, including campus-based programs in the sciences and psychology. Working adults will find that most classes are scheduled for the late afternoon and early evening.
Brooklyn College?s handsome, twenty-six-acre campus of broad lawns and Georgian-style buildings is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood within easy reach of Manhattan via public transportation. Students from across the country and around the world attend the Division of Graduate Studies for its distinguished faculty and superb resources.
The tradition of academic excellence is reflected in the accomplishments of the College?s graduates and faculty members. Brooklyn College ranks nineteenth nationally in the number of undergraduates who have gone on to receive PhD degrees, and it has a faculty distinguished by master teaching and scholarly achievement. Ninety percent of the full-time faculty members hold the highest degree in their field. Among them are Fulbright, Guggenheim, and MacArthur Foundation fellows; an Obie Award?winning playwright; Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award?winning authors; and award-winning scientists and musicians. Brooklyn?s MFA Creative Writing Program was recently rated #15 nationally, and its School of Education is rated as one of the top 20 in the nation.
Research centers include solid-state, solar energy, environmental sciences, and nuclear physics laboratories. Other major facilities are an outpatient Speech and Hearing Center, the H. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music, a professional performing arts center, and sophisticated television and radio production centers. The newly renovated library is the biggest and most advanced in CUNY and is a comprehensive information center with extensive physical and digital collections. The library?s growing collections include approximately 15,000 remotely accessible electronic subscriptions and works of reference, 50,000 electronic books, 1.3 million volumes, 1.6 million microfilms, 50,000 serials, and 25,000 rich media items (sound recordings, videotapes, and DVDs). Its 22 group-study rooms, five computer classrooms, and 600+ computers make it the campus?s premier study and research space. Students have access to over 1,000 state-of-the-art computers in various public computer labs, each with extensive operating hours, including the Library Caf? that combines casual computing, a Starbucks, and 24/7 computer availability. Scores of specialized computer labs and high-tech learning spaces support the College?s many programs.
The new state-of-the-art physical education and athletics building houses a swimming pool, competition and practice gymnasiums, racquetball courts, a fitness center, and teaching and research labs as well as a consolidated student services center offering one-stop service for most student administrative transactions. Construction is beginning on a new $50-million center for the performing arts, which will serve the Conservatory of Music, the Department of Theater and related disciplines.
Assistantships, fellowships, and scholarships in all academic areas are available to qualified students. The Magner Center for Career Development and Internships facilitates Web-based job searches through the CUNY Metro job bank as well as offering a full range of career services.
