Today, Cleveland extends its academic offerings to include the College of Graduate Studies with a Master of Science in Health Promotion.
The Master of Science in Health Promotion (MSHP) prepares graduates to assume leadership roles as advocates for healthier lifestyles. The MSHP degree, offered through the College of Graduate Studies, requires 36 hours of coursework, including 21 hours of core courses. The core course block is designed to provide students with advanced study in the foundations, planning, implementation and evaluation of health promotion programs.
MSHP graduates will be expected to:
? Develop, implement and evaluate health promotion and wellness programs for individuals, groups or communities.
? Engage in policy issues locally, regionally and nationally.
? Advocate for the benefits of a healthier lifestyle.
? Conduct research in the area of public health.
The program will take advantage of a strong science curriculum that has been developed at Cleveland College over its 80-year history. It concludes with a capstone project that provides an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge acquired through the program in a real life setting. Graduates of the program will be prepared to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam or a comparable certification.
There is no doubt that this is the perfect time to consider a career in health promotion. Researchers report that 70-80 percent of cancers and heart disease is preventable by healthy lifestyle choices. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the health education profession is expected to grow much faster than the average for all professions.
