Harry Katz, Academic Dean
Cornell University's ILR School is the premiere institution in the field it pioneered: the study of employment related issues. ILR is a combined program in business, liberal arts, and professional studies centered in the social sciences and their applications to the real problems of real people. For more than 60 years the school has provided a setting where undergraduates, graduate students and working professionals become knowledgeable about, and skilled in leading an increasingly complex, diverse workplace.
ILR offers both practical, career-focused degrees and more academic, research-focused degrees. The Master of Industrial and Labor Relations (MILR) degree is a perfect degree for those interested in putting their education into practice in a workplace setting. ILR offers unique depth and breadth combining the latest in theory with an applied focus, broadening your knowledge and equipping you with the skills you need to lead an increasingly complex, diverse workplace. The MS/PhD program is intended for those who want to pursue a specific research project in labor issues, organizational behavior, international & comparative labor, or human resources issues. This program offers the opportunity to work closely with some of the best researchers and faculty in the field.
ILR has the world's largest concentration of scholars in the areas of human resources, organizational behavior, labor relations, collective bargaining, dispute resolution, labor economics, social statistics and international and comparative labor studies. They are acknowledged instructors with award-winning teaching practices, and first-rate researchers who write books and articles that define their discipline. They are faculty members who creatively address cutting edge issues of today's workplace.
Comprised of 900 undergraduates, 150 graduate students, and 50 tenured or tenure-track faculty members, ILR graduate students have access to a large Ivy League university while enjoying the benefits of a small, collegial graduate community within ILR. Students are eligible to take electives outside of ILR, allowing students to tailor their experience to their interests and career goals. There is a great deal of flexibility in choosing courses in addition to the required core courses. ILR has the distinct advantage of offering cross-disciplinary access to 4,000 courses at Cornell's 12 other colleges and schools providing ILR students an opportunity to create a well-rounded and inter-disciplinary degree plan. ILR students benefit from a large number of nationally-known faculty members, an excellent department library with over 232,000 books, journals, and electronic resources, internationally known institutes and research centers, an extensive career development program, and a well-established campus recruiting program.
The majority of ILR graduates secure rewarding careers in fields of interest to them before graduation. ILR graduates are consistently in demand and you will find alumni working in business, high-tech, financial services, manufacturing, labor unions, government and not-for-profit sectors in every region of the United States and around the world.
