An MBA may help agricultural managers make better business decisions

Friday, February 03, 2012
Individuals who wish to become agricultural managers may find it easier to oversee the daily operations at farms and ranches if they have a background in business.

Students at California State University, Fresno will be able to prepare for the business side of the agriculture industry in the fall of 2012 when the school launches and Ag MBA elective, the Fresno Business Journal reported.

Through this new program, students will take a combination of agricultural business and core MBA courses, the news source stated. As students work their way through classes focused on agribusiness managerial accounting and farm and ranch appraisal, they will gain a foundation in both the scientific and business aspects of the agriculture industry.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, agricultural managers are responsible for purchasing everything from machinery and seed to fertilizers and pesticides.

While many farmers have an understanding of agricultural sciences, they lack knowledge in business areas, the Fresno Business Journal reported. In some cases, these individuals have to hire others to handle their financial planning. This may be one reason why the program has already attracted attention from prospective students, despite the fact that the university has not begun to accept applications.
