 GRADUATE TEST TAKING

Changes to the MCAT expected

Thursday, November 17, 2011
If individuals plan to apply to medical school, they should be prepared to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), as the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) states that almost all U.S. medical schools require applicants to submit their scores from this assessment.

However, prospective medical students may have to prepare to take a revised MCAT, as the AAMC board recently proposed several recommendations for changes they would make to the test, The GW Hatchet, The George Washington University (GWU) student newspaper, reported.

Currently, the MCAT assesses potential students' critical thinking, problem solving and writing skills, as well as their knowledge of scientific concepts and principles, according to AAMC. However, if the board's recommendations are approved, the test will feature a section focused on social and behavioral skills, the news source stated.

"The new social [and] behavioral skills section will test concepts needed in today’s diverse world, related to socio-cultural and behavioral determinants of health outcomes," Diane McQuail, assistant dean for admissions at GWU's School of Medicine and Health Sciences, told the news outlet.

AAMC's recommendations are likely to be approved in February 2012 and implemented by 2015, according to the news source.
