Emergency management programs prepare disaster response directors

Whether a flood, hurricane or earthquake has led to a natural disaster, or a crisis at a nuclear power plant requires immediate attention, emergency management directors are responsible for responding to these events, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In Connecticut, the University of New Haven launched a Master’s in Emergency Management program this past fall, the Hartford Courant reported. The track is the first of its kind in the state, and focuses on such topics as preparedness, response, mitigation and recovery.
Two recent weather emergencies in Connecticut have only enhanced the program’s curriculum, the news source stated. In late August, the state tackled a tropical storm, and then faced an unexpected snowstorm in October. Both events were incorporated into the track’s courses.
About 20 students are currently enrolled in the program, which features a course that examines the social dimensions of emergencies.
"I don’t think we really understand yet what the impact of disaster is on society and the people who live near that location," said Wayne Sandford, former deputy director of Connecticut’s Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, who also runs the graduate program.
Sandford added that emergency management will be one of the fastest-growing fields over the next five to seven years, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
