Future education leaders can gain a background in business
| Tuesday, January 24, 2012 |
While a background in teaching is helpful for individuals who wish to become education administrators, a knowledge of certain business topics can be just as useful. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that a background in accounting or statistics can be helpful for those who will handle financial work or admissions.
Indiana University is one school where prospective education administrators can go to earn an Executive Doctor of Education (Ed.D) that will also provide them with management leadership skills. Through this program, which is offered through collaboration between the university’s School of Education and Kelley School of Business, students can also work towards a Master’s in Strategic Management.
By taking courses for both degrees simultaneously, students cut down on the time and cost of pursuing these credentials separately.
"The Kelley School's globally recognized strategic management faculty will provide school leaders with the tools to direct the future of education in the state of Indiana and eventually nationwide," said Dan Smith, dean of the Kelley School.
As students progress in the three-year program, they will take courses on topics such as curriculum and instructional leadership, law and entrepreneurship. In addition, the track’s business courses will all be available via distance learning.
