Good job prospects expected for rehabilitation counselors

As rehabilitation counselors, individuals have the ability to make a difference in the lives of those who suffer from physical or emotional disabilities. Their services involve evaluating the strengths and limitations of the patient and developing an individual rehabilitation program, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
However, before rehabilitation counselors can provide these services, they must study at the graduate level. To help students achieve their professional goals, the University of Saint Francis in Indiana will offer a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling next fall.
The 36 credit-hour program, which will be offered through the university’s School of Professional Studies, is designed to provide students with an introduction to the rehabilitation field. Those who enroll will be required to take courses such as lifestyle and career counseling and behavioral medicine in rehabilitation, according to the university’s Web site.
Ultimately, students will complete the program with knowledge of counseling approaches and rehabilitation theories, as well as the clinical skills necessary to help disabled individuals live more fulfilling lives.
Students who pursue this graduate degree may also face promising job prospects in the years ahead. BLS states that a 19 percent increase in employment opportunities for rehabilitation counselors is expected through 2018, due in part to a growing elderly population.
