Graduate school can help create future energy industry leaders
| Thursday, February 02, 2012 |
In the oil and gas extraction industry, individuals may hold such jobs as geoscientist, petroleum engineer and refinery operator, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those who are interested in advancing to leadership roles in this sector may be able to do so by earning a graduate degree.
Officials from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma believe this to be true, and will launch a Master of Energy Business program for workers looking to become industry leaders, Tulsa World reported.
Tim Coburn, the program’s director, told the news source that he expects most of the students who enroll to be young geologists and engineers who see leadership positions that are not being filled. The two-year program, which will be offered through the university’s Collins College of Business, will mainly be available online. However, students will also be able to share experiences and advice with one another during two or three retreats.
"They're not going to see a meaningful bump in their salary right away," Coburn said. "What will happen is that having that type of degree under their belt will set them up for future opportunities so they don't top out as early in their career as their peers might."
