Graduate schools help education degree seekers begin teaching quickly
| Tuesday, August 24, 2010 |
The economic downturn has inspired many laid-off professionals to use their skills in alternative career fields, such as teaching. In response to this trend, many colleges are launching master's programs designed to ease the transition between jobs.
For example, the University of Delaware recently announced the launch of an accelerated graduate track for prospective teachers according to UDaily, the University’s online news service.
The University’s Master of Arts in Teaching program is designed for mid-career individuals who have decided to enter the education field. This course of study may also be ideal for recent graduates of bachelor's degree programs in specific subject areas, such as science or mathematics.
Students are required to work in cohorts and complete hands-on training in local classrooms. These students may be able to complete their coursework and earn a teacher certification in as few as 12 months.
Teachers who hold a master's degree are likely to earn higher salaries than first-year educators who have only completed a bachelor's program, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports. Some states require educators to complete graduate-level studies in order to earn certification.
