Graduate schools strive for increased diversity on campus

Thursday, February 02, 2012
Although experienced professors may equip students with the knowledge needed to be successful in their intended careers, if everyone enrolled in these programs looks and thinks alike, students may not gain the personal skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly diverse society.

There are many benefits to having diversity on campuses, according to Diversity Web, an American Colleges and Universities project.  The Web site reported that greater diversity around school can have a positive impact on students’ attitudes toward racial issues.

In New York City, Columbia University’s graduate schools are currently taking steps that they hope will increase diversity in their programs, The Columbia Daily Spectator reported. To date, 12 of the university’s 14 graduate schools have submitted three-year plans to the provost’s office that highlight different ways they can build a more diverse academic community.

The university’s School of Nursing was among those to submit a plan. In Dean Bobbie Berkowitz’s opinion, the school’s faculty is not as diverse as the communities students will serve after graduating, according to the news source.

"I think we’ve made important strides in recent years, but we strive for greater diversity," Kerith Gardner, director of faculty affairs and special projects at the university’s Business School, told the news outlet.
