Graduate students may want to consider internships

Tuesday, February 14, 2012
When researching potential graduate schools, students may want to pay close attention to the types of internship programs offered.

For instance, Riana Lynn, a graduate student at Illinois' Northwestern University, recently completed a five-month internship at the White House, The Daily Northwestern reported. Lynn, a public policy and administration major, told the news source that the internship at the White House’s Office of Public Engagement was her first choice.

"A lot of times the White House, or the Office of Public Engagement, is called the first link between president and the public," Lynn told the news outlet.

During her internship, Lynn said she was able to connect youth, women and minorities with the White House, while also expanding the Office of Public Engagement’s presence. In addition, the graduate student helped organize an event for Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign designed to break the Guinness World Record for the most jumping jacks in 24 hours.

Taking advantage of internship opportunities has been known to help students’ careers following the completion of their studies. The results of the Graduate Management Admission Council’s Global Management Education Graduate Survey showed that students who completed an internship were 26 percent more likely to receive a job offer after their studies.
