 DISTANCE LEARNING

Legal professionals can expand their knowledge online

Thursday, February 16, 2012
With each passing year, professionals enter such sectors as business, education and law with a graduate degree they earned online.

Prospective lawyers who prefer the flexibility of an online program will be pleased to learn that the academic options available to them are set to increase. The John Marshall Law School in Illinois recently announced that it will bring several of its degrees to the Web.

Available online in both Master of Science and Master of Laws (LLM) formats are John Marshall’s employee benefits; intellectual property law; and information technology and privacy law programs. Beginning in the fall 2012 semester, students will be able to earn an LLM in Estate Planning through distance learning as well.

Thanks to the programs’ online format, students can take courses at any time, no matter where they are. The tracks are structured in a way that allow students to log on and interact with their professors and classmates using discussion boards, chat and other Web tools.

"This gives lawyers and professionals opportunities for learning that they otherwise may not have," said Robert J. Nye, the law school’s director of distance education. "We’ve seen that students don’t always have to be in a classroom to learn."
