Many business schools interested in enrolling veterans

In his recent State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama announced that 10,000 U.S. troops have already come home, with an additional 23,000 more set to leave Afghanistan by the end of this summer. As these soldiers settle back into civilian life, many of them may be considering a return to school to earn a graduate degree.
More than a few of these individuals may find success in MBA programs, as several business schools are actively recruiting veterans, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported. Harvard Business School, the University of California, Berkeley and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania have all taken a greater interest in having service members in their classrooms.
Part of these veterans' appeal is the different perspective on leadership they bring to business school, according to the news source. This has made former service members, like U.S. Army Captain Tom Pae, desirable MBA candidates. This fall, Pae will begin his studies at Columbia Business School, which he considered to be his reach school.
The news outlet highlighted data from Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families, which shows that as the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan wind down, the number of retiring veterans may increase by 10 to 15 percent over the next five years. As a result, the number of applications graduate programs receive may also rise.
