Master's programs can help public health officials develop business skills

Wednesday, August 25, 2010
While there are many graduate programs in public health that can help degree seekers procure prominent positions in this expanding field, some schools are launching new courses of study that could put these individuals ahead of the curve.

Washington University in St. Louis is one of these institutions, as school officials recently created a public health master's program that will integrate business practices.

This program was created through a collaboration between the University’s Olin Business School and Brown School of Social Work, and will be presented using an interdisciplinary approach. The curriculum is designed to help students develop business skills, an expertise in public policy and an overall understanding of the modern healthcare system.

Administrators estimate that the 87–course hour program will take between two and a half to three years to complete full-time. Graduates will earn both MBA and Master's of Public Health (MPH) degrees.

Individuals who complete similar programs may be eligible for management positions in medical and health services, which pay an average of $80,240 per year, according to 2008 data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
