Master's programs can help students fight threats to national health

Thursday, August 26, 2010
Recent food-related disasters such as the salmonella contamination of eggs have brought to light the need for skilled professionals who can prevent similar epidemics. As a result, some graduate schools are expanding their offerings to prepare degree seekers to enter related fields, such as agricultural biosecurity.

Although current events have highlighted the need for these individuals, education officials insist that food-borne illnesses have long been a focus of master's programs across the country. In fact, schools such as Penn State University consider these problems a threat to homeland security.

Walter McVey, a professor in the University's veterinary and biomedical sciences department, said in a press release from the university that "having an infectious disease surveillance system and network in place is key for early detection of diseases, which can cause billions of dollars in economic damage."

Individuals who wish to participate in the development of similar systems may want to consider enrolling in a master's program in a related field. Students in these programs will learn how to identify and address, animal and food security problems, methods to track infectious diseases, diagnostic and sensor tools, prediction models, protection and mitigation plans and microbial forensics.
