Medical students can work towards preventing traumatic brain injuries

Tuesday, January 31, 2012
Everything from bumping one’s head to receiving a severe blow may lead to the development of a traumatic brain injury (TBI). This serious medical condition has the potential to lead to amnesia, permanent disability or even death.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that 1.7 million people sustain a TBI on an annual basis. Furthermore, 275,000 of these individuals are hospitalized, while 52,000 die.

In an effort to lower these statistics, the Michael T. Goulet Traumatic Brain Injury and Epilepsy Foundation recently provided the University of New England Center for Excellence in Neurosciences with a grant that will fund three new programs. A portion of the money will support two students who are enrolled in the College of Osteopathic Medicine and pursuing careers in neurology and neurocritical care.

"These programs offer an opportunity to make a difference with the greatest impact – prevention," said Brad Goulet, chairman of the foundation and father to Michael Goulet, who passed away due to complications related to a TBI.

The Student Fellowships in Neurocritical Care and Neurology program will be awarded to two students in the summer of 2012. They will have an opportunity to further their knowledge by participating in research with university partners, such as the Maine Medical Center and the River Ridge Center.
