New engineering programs cater to high-demand industries

Monday, August 30, 2010
Although highly educated engineers are typically able to land jobs in traditional fields - such as construction and manufacturing - there are several other sectors where these professionals are needed. As a result, many graduate schools are increasing their offerings in an effort to help prospective engineers land lucrative positions in various industries.

The University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering is one of these institutions, as a recent press release from University officials announced the availability of a new master's program in bioengineering.

This course of study is intended to help students enter the fast-growing healthcare field, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects will create more than 3 million new jobs over the next eight years. Individuals who complete similar programs will have a strong knowledge of both biology and engineering.

The curricula for these types of programs may include classes on biological systems, cellular and tissue biomechanics, quantitative cell physiology, bioengineering systems and designs, modern methods of drug delivery, biomedial optics, biosensor techniques and tissue engineering.
