Registered nurses can advance their careers with online degrees
| Tuesday, February 21, 2012 |
As nurse practitioners, individuals diagnose and treat patients who have acute, episodic or chronic illnesses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Professionals in this field can also specialize in specific areas, such as gerontology, cardiology and family practice.
However, before registered nurses can advance their careers and become nurse practitioners, they must earn at least a master’s degree. To help make this process a little easier, Herzing University Online, a school with locations in eight states, has introduced a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program with a Family Nurse Practitioner concentration.
This 20-month online program is currently available to students in 27 states, including California, New Jersey and Texas. University officials feel that the Web-based track will help registered nurses fill roles in areas where their talents are most needed.
"The MSN in Family Nurse Practitioner program is designed for busy nursing professionals to advance their careers through convenient online classes that give them the flexibility to fit classes around their work and family schedules," said Todd Rickel, Herzing’s campus president. Through this online graduate program, students will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to work in such medical fields as family medicine, gynecology, obstetrics, cardiology and internal medicine.
