Some business schools changing to meet students' needs
| Monday, February 06, 2012 |
Following the recent economic downturn, many companies and some schools are rethinking the way they operate. This is especially true of business schools.
Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management is the latest to announce changes to its MBA program, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported. While the school is still finalizing its plans, a major overhaul is expected. Dean Sally Blount told the news source that the world has changed and Kellogg has to internalize that realization.
"Demand for the two-year MBA is slowing," Blount said. "One-year and alternative master’s degrees are a reality. And people in their 20s are going to live so much longer than their grandparents, yet they perceive they have so little time for education."
Among the expected changes is a 25 percent reduction in the size of Kellogg’s two-year MBA program. According to the news outlet, this means that within the next three to four years, the number of students pursuing this particular MBA option will drop from 1,115 to 850. Meanwhile, the number of individuals enrolled in the one-year program will increase from 80 to 240.
Kellogg’s one-year MBA program currently requires students to take 15.5 courses in 12 months, the school’s Web site states. This means they must complete three to five classes during the summer quarter.
