Some students may benefit from additional time in law school
| Friday, February 17, 2012 |
Before lawyers can practice law in the U.S., they must pass the bar exam, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). However, this is no easy task, and oftentimes, legal students may feel better prepared for the assessment if they spend more time in school.
The City University of New York (CUNY) wants to help struggling students prepare for the bar exam. The Ticker reported that CUNY’s School of Law will now offer an additional semester to students, free of charge, as long as they take the bar exam in February, as opposed to July.
"Similar to other law schools, we are now offering struggling third-year students the option of taking an additional semester of intensive, structured, bar-oriented coursework, at no cost, to increase their chances of passing the bar," Michelle Anderson, dean of the CUNY School of Law, told the news source.
The additional semester is optional, and costs the school nothing to offer, the news outlet stated. This is due to the fact that the initiative uses existing courses and support staff.
Whether law students take the bar in February or July, they may have an interest in learning that job opportunities for lawyers are expected to increase by 13 percent by 2018, BLS reports.
