Students applying to business school at a younger age

Tuesday, February 14, 2012
After graduating from college, many individuals choose to work for several years before taking the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and applying to business school.

However, new research from the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) reveals that many prospective MBA students are considering business school at a younger age, Bloomberg BusinessWeek reported.

The 2011 World Geographic Trend Report for GMAT Examinees states that 41 percent of GMAT-takers were under the age of 25, which was the same number of individuals between the ages of 25 and 30 who took the assessment. Meanwhile, 18 percent of test-takers were 31 or older.

BusinessWeek added that within the past five years, the number of GMAT-takers under the age of 25 has risen from 37 percent to 44 percent worldwide.

"The GMAT pipeline as it relates to prospective MBA students is almost entirely different today than it used to be," Alex Chisholm, GMAT’s senior manager of statistical analysis, told the news source. "While it might be one exam, I think it is increasingly reflecting two distinct pipelines in management education today, both the MBA programs and specialized master's programs."

According to the report, many business students are also choosing to pursue graduate programs in finance and management instead of the traditional MBA.
