Students can learn how to keep the country safe in graduate school

The Department of Homeland Security works to minimize potential harm to U.S. citizens by preventing terrorist attacks and reducing the damage from these incidents and natural disasters, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
Soon, students who are interested in joining this field will be able to gain the training they require through a Master’s in Homeland Security and Emergency Management at Alabama’s Auburn Montgomery (AUM), the Montgomery Advertiser reported.
Although AUM offers a Homeland Security option through its Master’s in Justice and Public Safety program, this will be the first time the school devotes an entire graduate degree to the topic. Interest in the new track is high, as 25 students have already enrolled, according to the news source.
The program, which students will be able to complete online, will take between one and a half to two years to complete, the news outlet reported. Courses will cover such topics as emergency management and weapons of mass destruction. In addition, professionals from the fields of law enforcement, the Secret Service, the U.S. Marshals Service and the military will teach these classes.
According to BLS, a variety of jobs are available within the Department of Homeland Security in areas such as Citizenship and Immigration Services, Customs and Border Protection and Transportation and Security Administration.
