Students can work towards their degree while serving in the Peace Corps
| Thursday, January 26, 2012 |
Since the Peace Corps was established in 1961, more than 200,000 individuals have volunteered to work in such areas as education, health and youth development in countries around the world, states the organization’s Web site.
At the University of Virginia, students who enroll in the school’s new Peace Corps Master’s International in Public Health program will be required to serve in the organization before they can earn their Master’s in International Public Health, The Cavalier Daily reported.
The university is currently accepting students for the program through a rolling admissions process, the news source stated. Students must first apply to the school’s Master’s of Public Health track. Once accepted, they devote their first year to completing course work at the school, and then spend 27 months abroad as members of the Peace Corps. Before they can earn their degree, students must complete an additional semester back at the university.
"To positively impact health, you need to understand communities," Jeanita Richardson, associate professor of public health sciences at the university, told the news outlet. "To promote health begins with developing meaningful relationships."
Paige Hornsby, an assistant professor in the university’s medical school, added that the program will supply the Peace Corps with more highly trained volunteers.
