Immigration fuels the need for English language teachers

Friday, July 27, 2012
As the nation’s population becomes more diverse, the need for educators who can teach English to speakers of other languages will increase.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for English as a second language teachers are projected to increase by 15 percent between 2010 and 2020. This rise in employment is due in part to an influx of immigrants that is expected during the same time frame.

To help educators hone their skills as English as a second language (ESL) teachers, schools like New York’s Niagara University are launching new graduate programs. This fall, the university’s College of Education will introduce a master’s degree program for students who wish to receive certification in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), according to Niagara’s Web site. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be prepared to teach ESL in New York.

"As the number of English language learners has increased, so has the need for schools to recruit teachers with the skills necessary to engage all students," said Debra Colley, dean of Niagara’s College of Education, as quoted by the Web site. "An increasing demand for ESL teachers has created a multitude of career opportunities in the U.S. and abroad."
