More schools offer sustainable degrees online to meet student demand
| Tuesday, February 08, 2011 |
The wind power sector of the renewable energy industry is a source of thousands of U.S. jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As the green economy continues to grow, so does interest in advanced degrees in sustainability.
To meet the demand for more accessible programs at the graduate level, a number of academic institutions are offering their programs in sustainability in an online format.
For instance, Antioch University New England in New Hampshire recently announced that it would provide an online option for its MBA in sustainability track starting May, 2011. This decision was due to an increased demand for leaders with an environmentally responsible outlook on business.
Antioch’s distance learning option will be able to reach people in all geographic locations, according to Polly Chandler, director of the university's MBA in sustainability program.
The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has also noticed the demand for advanced education that can prepare individuals for socially responsible careers. The institution now offers an online graduate certificate in sustainable development after its pilot program attracted a double capacity crowd.
Though the university's pilot program was limited to Massachusetts residents, requests poured in from applicants around the country and all over the world.
