Specialty master's degrees provide students with a focused education
| Thursday, April 14, 2011 |
An MBA degree can provide students with a broad range of advanced business knowledge. However, some individuals may prefer to devote their graduate studies to a specific area of business, such as accounting or finance.
At the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business students can pursue an MBA, or choose from several specialty master's degrees.
While a traditional MBA typically requires 62 credit hours, the university's specialty master's degrees call for 30 credit hours on average. This can make for a less expensive graduate education and immediate career benefits, according to school officials.
"These programs allow students to develop deep skill levels in a concentrated field that can be applied immediately to the workplace to further advance careers, begin new ones or provide job security," said Taylor Randall, dean of the School of Business.
For instance, individuals who enroll in the Master of Accounting program receive an education that prepares them for the Certified Public Accountant examination. The Master of Science in Finance provides a grounding in venture and private equity funding and corporate finance to help students who plan to sit for the Chartered Financial Analyst exams.
