Hofstra University is a dynamic private institution offering about 150 graduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences, business, communication, education, health and human services, and law.
Graduate students at Hofstra are motivated and focused, and the university provides the resources they need to achieve their goals. These resources include a distinguished faculty, extensive academic offerings and technology-rich teaching facilities.
Ninety-one percent of Hofstra's full-time faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. And with a student-faculty ratio of 9-to-1, these scholar-teachers emphasize interaction with their students, critical thinking and analysis.
Hofstra's distinctive, 240-acre campus, a member of the American Public Gardens Association, is located in suburban Long Island, just 45 minutes east of New York City and all its cultural offerings and internship opportunities. The campus has 115 buildings, including state-of-the-art teaching facilities, 37 residence halls, and libraries with 1.2 million print volumes and 24/7 electronic access to more than 49,000 journals and 42,400 e-books. The University holds 21 academic accreditations.
C.V. Starr Hall, home to the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, features the Martin B. Greenberg Trading Room, one of the most advanced academic trading rooms in the nation, with 34 Bloomberg Professional terminals and Internet access at every student seat. The School of Communication's Dempster Hall contains one of the largest non-commercial broadcast facilities in the Northeast, as well as a new converged newsroom and multimedia classroom. Hagedorn Hall, where the School of Education and Health and Human Services is located, provides a technology-rich learning environment, complete with interactive whiteboards, computer-driven instructor stations and wireless communication.
In addition, there are six theaters, including a black box theater, and an accredited museum. The university also offers two open-access computer labs, one open 24/7, and numerous wireless hotspots located across campus.
Hofstra also encourages students to take advantage of opportunities for learning beyond the classroom, by offering students valuable career opportunities through internships in a variety of areas of specialization.
In addition, Hofstra hosts more than 500 cultural events each year, including debates, lectures and readings that draw nationally prominent scholars, business leaders, writers and celebrities to campus. Recent visitors include: CNN's Anderson Cooper, ABC's George Stephanopoulos, former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, Atlantic Records recording artist Jason Mraz, Obama for America Campaign Manager David Plouffe, political pundits Mary Matalin and James Carville, feminist activist Gloria Steinem, and former White House Press Secretaries Dee Dee Myers and Ari Fleischer.
The Hofstra student body is ethnically, culturally and geographically diverse, with students representing 49 states and territories and 71 countries.
To accommodate students with full-time jobs and other responsibilities, most graduate courses are offered in the evening.
