The MA in Jewish Education trains students as practitioners in multiple settings, including day, congregational, community, and supplementary schools; camps; JCCs; and Jewish educational organizations. After studying a core curriculum, students choose to specialize in one of three areas: day school education, synagogue school leadership, or informal and communal education. Specializations are also offered in special needs and early childhood through the JTS consortium with Teachers College, Columbia University. Students with an interest in the arts, special education, adult education, the environment, or technology work with advisers to develop programs tailored to their career goals.
Generous need- and merit-based fellowships are available. MA students may attend full-time or part-time. Part-time MA students can choose to pursue their degree through distance learning courses. Distance learning courses are also open to all in-residence students.
The EdD in Jewish Education prepares academics and senior professionals for leadership in Jewish education by providing training in administration, supervision, curriculum development, and educational research, as well as for academic careers. Full-tuition fellowships with $20,000 living stipends are available for full-time doctoral students.
Part-time weekday doctoral programs are available. JTS also offers a part-time executive doctoral program in which senior Jewish education professionals earn 6 credits each semester by attending classes at JTS on Sundays and Mondays (only twice each semester) and pursuing distance learning course work. Students complete their degrees in three to six years, depending on the number of courses they take each summer.
JTS doctoral students also benefit from the consortium with Teachers College, Columbia University.
