Students attending The Graduate School receive the most comprehensive education in advanced Jewish Studies available in North America. Through specialized courses of study, students prepare to pursue careers in academia, Jewish art, or Jewish professional leadership. The distinguished faculty of The Graduate School is the largest in the Western Hemisphere devoted entirely to Jewish Studies. Its commitment to the highest academic achievement has earned The Graduate School international renown. The expertise of the faculty provides unparalleled opportunities to study with esteemed scholars in the graduate student?s chosen discipline.
The Library?s Special Collection, available to all Graduate School students, consists of more than 30,000 items and includes thousands of rare books. The Library also houses 11,000 ancient manuscripts, as well as 40,000 genizah fragments, offering extraordinary possibilities for original scholarship. Additional research opportunities are available through the neighboring libraries of Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary, and Teachers College.
For MA and DHL (Doctor of Hebrew Literature) students, The Graduate School has a consortium agreement with Columbia University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Union Theological Seminary. For PhD students, The Graduate School consortium agreement includes Fordham University (also open to DHL students), New York University, University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Princeton University, and Yale University.
The Graduate School offers two to three online courses each semester. These courses are open to both matriculating and nonmatriculating students.
Need-based financial aid is available to U.S. and Canadian matriculated MA students. U.S. citizens are eligible for need-based tuition grants as well as U.S. government loans. Canadian citizens, with the exception of Quebec residents, are eligible for tuition grants and Canadian student loans.
All PhD students who apply by January 2 are automatically considered for merit fellowships, which provide tuition, a stipend, and health insurance for five years. Advanced doctoral students may be awarded teaching assistantships. Some merit fellowships are also available for MA students.
