National University of Health Sciences (NUHS) is a primary destination of choice for those seeking a professional career in natural health care.
Established in 1906 as a single purpose chiropractic college, National?s academic programs now encompass chiropractic and naturopathic medicine, acupuncture and oriental medicine, massage therapy, and chiropractic assistance.
By bringing all of these programs together under one roof, National University is able to develop, encourage and promote collegiality among members of the complementary and alternative professions. Currently, NUHS is one of only two institutions in the U.S. to combine chiropractic medicine, naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, and oriental medicine on one campus, and the only one whose philosophy emphasizes integrated program delivery.
National University?s students can learn a specific health care discipline, develop a better understanding of other complementary healing arts and sciences, and become better prepared for interaction and practice in an integrated health care environment.
National believes in ?hands-on? education, integrating extensive technique, anatomy and diagnostic lab experiences into each of its professional programs. Students are also given the opportunity to work in real patient care and research settings, and develop the skills they will use in their future careers.
In addition, students are prepared for the business and practical realities of a professional career. Business management, ethics and practice-building skills are incorporated into each program. Classes are taught by experts in their field who provide the nuts and bolts of setting up and running a practice, billing and insurance issues, ethically promoting a practice, and working effectively with other health care providers and managed care organizations.
To all of its academic programs, this century-old institution brings its long-standing reputation for innovative leadership, high academic standards, outstanding faculty, and distinguished alumni.
National University admits new students in January, May and September. To help ensure their success as health care professionals, students in the College of Professional Studies are required to have earned a bachelor's degree in the arts or sciences from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, and have completed specific science courses. Beginning Fall 2012, the minimum GPA required for admission to the chiropractic and naturopathic medicine programs will be 2.75.
Students who have not completed their baccalaureate degree may enroll in the NUHS Bachelor of Science Degree in Biomedical Sciences completion program. It is designed for students with a two-year/associate's degree or 60 semester hours of general education credits who wish to earn a bachelor's degree to prepare for a career in science or health care.
Students who have an undergraduate degree in non-science majors or those who fall short of the required science credit hours to meet National University admission requirements, may enroll in the NUHS Prerequisite Program. Under this program, students can finish the prerequisites in either traditional 15-week sessions or in accelerated eight-week sessions prior to starting their doctoral program.
National University is located in the western suburbs of Chicago on a 35-acre campus, which consists of teaching and research laboratories, student housing, a fitness center, Learning Resource Center, and a health care center that includes chiropractic, naturopathic, oriental medicine, and massage therapy clinics. The Doctor of Chiropractic Program is also offered in St. Petersburg, Florida, through the University Partnership Center of St. Petersburg College.
