As a lead institution for research, its expertise crosses many disciplines within the College of Arts and Sciences, Health Sciences Center, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, and College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. World-renowned scholars come to Stony Brook regularly as visiting professors and lecturers. Richard Leakey is a member of the Department of Anthropology, while Noam Chomsky and Angela Davis are regular visitors to the Department of Philosophy. The University has been home to three Nobel Prize winners: C.N. Yang, Professor Emeritus, physics; Robert Aumann, economics; and Paul Lauterbur, a chemistry professor awarded the Prize in Medicine for his work leading to the development of the MRI. Four professors from the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences were recently named as ?co-winners? of the Nobel Peace Prize shared with Al Gore for their contributions to understanding global warming.
Stony Brook has something that no other graduate school in the Northeast has?a working relationship with two of the top laboratories in the world, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), which the University co-manages, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL). BNL, only 20 miles east of campus, features world-class research facilities, including the National Synchrotron Light Source, which attracts more users than any other research machine in the world. BNL scientists, many of whom teach on campus, conduct research in areas such as structural biology, chemistry, environmental science, medicine, nuclear and high-energy physics, and neuroscience. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, located 25 miles west of campus, is a research and education institution internationally recognized for its strength in the areas of bioinformatics; cancer; genetics; molecular, cellular, and structural biology; neuroscience; and plant biology.
The University has access to the latest advances in technology, including an IBM Blue Gene supercomputer, located at BNL, spectroscopy labs, imaging facilities, the Van de Graaf Nuclear Accelerator, and much more. Additional research units on campus include Stony Brook?s innovative Centers for Molecular Medicine and Biology Learning Laboratories, School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Heart Center, Ambulatory Surgery Center, Institute for Theoretical Physics, and the High Technology Incubator.
New research and learning centers on campus include the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics and the Laufer Center for Computational Biology and Genome Sciences. The University?s Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology and its Medical Center both provide advanced research opportunities for graduate students.
Stony Brook is located on the North Shore of Long Island, 60 miles east of New York City, and midway between Manhattan and Montauk. Its 1,000-acre campus is within a short drive of Atlantic Ocean beaches, the vineyards of the North Fork, and the Hamptons. A Long Island Rail Road station on campus connects the University with New York City, while nearby ferry service connects it with New England.
