Graduate programs that are only available on campus can pose a problem for individuals who are unable to attend classes on a regular basis.

Fortunately, more and more schools are offering graduate programs both on campus and online. American University in Washington, D.C., is the latest school to adapt a traditional program into a Web-based format.

As of January 2014, students will be able to begin working toward the university's Master of Arts in Strategic Communication, according to a press release. The program's goal is to help graduates stand out among their peers thanks to the storytelling and communication skills they acquire in traditional and digital media.

"Strategic communication is a logical choice for an online master's program because the field is growing exponentially," said Pallavi Kumar, assistant professor and senior associate division director of the Public Communication Division at the university. "In today's complex media landscape, no organization can excel without it so it has never been a better time to pursue a career in strategic communication."

According to American University's Web site, the online program can be completed in 20 months, while the traditional full-time program takes 12 months.
