The University of Massachusetts School of Law-Dartmouth offers a rigorous and rewarding legal education that prepares students for a full range of careers in the practice of law. UMass Law students are encouraged to become 'Citizen Lawyers'. Lawyers committed to the betterment of their community by practicing in areas like Civil and Human Rights, Community Law Practice, Economic Justice and providing Legal support for nonprofit organizations and help with the creation of innovative industries.
UMass Law Is distinguished by dual commitments to both excellence and affordability.
The assurance of excellence is founded on the high quality of the law faculty at UMass Law and the innovative curriculum they deliver. The curriculum offers a range of classroom and practice-based instruction, including courses that provide a broad foundation both in the theory and in the practice of law. UMass Law students profit from the advantages of small classes, individual association with distinguished faculty, collaboration with fellow students, and active learning through engagement in a supportive university environment.
The assurance of affordability represents an essential commitment of Massachusetts? public law school. Tuition rates are relatively low, both for in-state and out-of-state students. The Law School offers a range of particular financial aid possibilities in addition to state and federal programs, including academic scholarships and public service fellowships.
UMass Law believes that the quality of a legal education is enhanced when broadly differing perspectives on life and learning are shared and debated in an atmosphere of support and respect. As a part of our public mission and supported by our commitment to excellence and affordability, the Law School will enroll and graduate a significant proportion of students from ethnic, economic and regional groups which currently are under-represented in the law professions.
UMass Law offers full-time day, part-time day, and part-time evening weekend programs for the Juris Doctor degree, as well as a JD/MBA program and a JD/MPP program. For undergraduates attending the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth a 3+3 program is also offered.
All programs at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth are accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
The Dean of UMass Law is fully informed as to the Standards and Rules of Procedure for the Approval of Law Schools by the American Bar Association (ABA). The administration and Dean are determined to devote all necessary resources and in other respects to take all necessary steps to present a program of legal education that will qualify for approval by the ABA. The law school makes no representation to any applicant that it will be approved by the ABA prior to the graduation of any matriculating student.
UMass Law graduates may sit for the Massachusetts and Connecticut bar examinations immediately after graduation, and may sit for the bar examination in a number of other states after they are admitted to the Massachusetts or Connecticut bars. Graduates who have been admitted to practice in any state may practice before federal administrative agencies (e.g., the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the National Labor Relations Board) and they also may be admitted to practice before all Federal Courts of Appeal.
The Law School uses a rolling admission cycle beginning September 1 and ending June 30. Candidates are encouraged to submit applications well before the June 30 deadline.
