The University of Redlands School of Music is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music that offers a conservatory approach in a liberal arts setting. The School of Music offers Master of Music degrees in Conducting, Performance, Composition and Music Education as well as an Artist Diploma.
Performance opportunities abound at the university with more than 200 performances presented on campus annually, including the university's holiday tradition, the Feast of Lights, which features the University Choir. (Madrigals and Chapel Singers are two chamber choirs for advanced choral singers.)
Voice majors frequently audition and perform with regional theatre companies, often placing in Regional and National Metropolitan Opera auditions as well as the MTAC.
The goal at the University of Redlands School of Music is to educate the whole musician. All great performances go far beyond technical mastery to include a sense of history, society, culture and art. At Redlands, the students learn to perform, interpret and teach music in a liberal arts environment that provides a broad education and intense training.
The School of Music is the second oldest nationally accredited music program in California. The School has fourteen full-time faculty, twenty-six adjunct faculty and four staff members. Currently, there are 185 Music Majors in a variety of programs including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Music and Music Education and master's degrees in performance, composition and music education and conducting.
At Redlands the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, University Orchestra, Madrigal Singers, Chapel Singers, University Choir, Opera Workshop, Jazz Band, Jazz Improvisation Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and a variety of chamber ensembles offer numerous performance opportunities. The School's studio faculty includes some of the finest musicians and teachers in Southern California. The classes are small and your teachers will know you as a person, not just as a name on a class roster.
The School of Music has a very close and special relationship with the Redlands Symphony Orchestra (RSO). Redlands students have the opportunity to hear their teachers perform in Memorial Chapel as principal players in the RSO. Qualified students also have the opportunity to play in the RSO as an assistant, substitute or section player. The student winner of the School's concerto competition gets to perform with the RSO on a regular subscription series concert.
You are encouraged to visit campus, observe a class, have a sample lesson and/or sit in on a rehearsal.
