Rist Bequest Largest in College History
Reading, Pa. – Albright College has received a $3.5 million bequest from the estate of Berks County native Ella E. Rist of Wyomissing, Pa. The gift will endow the Charles A. Rist ’51 Family Scholarship for Berks County students in the top 10 percent of their class who wish to pursue an education in business at Albright College. The bequest is the largest bequest in the College’s history.
Ella Rist, who died in 2006 at the age of 82, was the widow of Charles A. Rist, an Albright business major who graduated in 1951. In her will, she followed her husband’s wish that Albright College receive their estate. She had previously established the Charles A. Rist ’51 Family Scholarship with a $25,000 gift in 2002, and the bequest will now create an endowment for the scholarship.
Ella Rist was employed as a secretary by the Atlantic Richfield Company in Spring Township and retired in 1970. She was a 1941 graduate of Reading High School.
Charles Rist, who died in 1994, was for 30 years the executive vice president and general manager of the former Dolfin Corporation, now Dolfin International in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania, manufacturer of swimsuits and sportswear. Also a Reading High School graduate, he retired in 1984. The couple had no children.

Gilbert Mancuso of Brumbach, Mancuso and Fegley PC, Ella Rist’s attorney, noted that the Rists were dedicated to establishing a meaningful and permanent benefit for students from Berks County. The fund, administered by National Penn Investors Trust Company in Wyomissing, fulfills that commitment in perpetuity.
According to Gregory E. Eichhorn, vice president for enrollment management, “the scholarship will be a valuable new resource to help make the College more accessible and affordable to local students who plan to study business. We hope this wonderful gift will increase the number of Berks students attending Albright.” Albright currently has 272 students from Berks County, including 65 first-year students who entered in fall 2006.

The Rist bequest is the largest bequest in the College’s history. In 1995, Albright received a $3 million bequest from the estate of Louise D. Hinnershots establishing the Warren L. Davis Memorial Scholarship. The largest gift in the College’s history was the 2005 gift of $4.75 million from Margaret Schumo and Cynthia Lynn to build the Schumo Center for Fitness and Well-Being. The Schumo Center, currently under construction at 13 th and Richmond Streets, will be completed in June 2007.
