The University at Buffalo offers nearly 300 graduate and professional degree programs in subject areas that range from architecture and engineering, to law and medicine, pharmacy and social work, and many fields of study in the arts and sciences. A member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, the University at Buffalo stands in the first rank among the nation’s research-intensive public universities. The university was founded as a private institution in 1846 and merged with the State University of New York in 1962. UB’s College of Arts and Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate study in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and physical sciences. The university also offers degree programs in its school of architecture and planning, dental medicine, education (graduate programs only), engineering, public health and health professions, law, management, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work. Total enrollment is more than 28,000, two-thirds are undergraduate students, and one-third are graduate and professional students.
As a research-intensive university, UB supports and houses a wide array of research institutes, centers, and laboratories. These organized units, and the research projects of individual faculty members, expended nearly $250 million in funds from federal and state agencies, foundations, and industrial research partners in recent years.
The university has two campuses. The South Campus, located in the northeast corner of the City of Buffalo, was the main campus for most of the twentieth century and is now largely devoted to the health sciences. The newer North Campus, located three miles from the South Campus on 1,200 acres in suburban Amherst, houses most of the university’s non-health-sciences divisions. The North Campus is also the site of new apartment-style accommodations for students and their families.
Buffalo is New York’s second largest city, the center of a metropolitan population of about 1.2 million. It is situated at the eastern end of 250-mile-long Lake Erie, where the waters of the Great Lakes funnel into the Niagara River on their way to world-famous Niagara Falls, twelve miles downstream from Buffalo’s waterfront.
Across the Peace Bridge from downtown Buffalo, wide beaches and cozy summer cottages stretch away to the west along the Canadian lake shore. A half-hour drive south of the city takes you to hilly, wooded countryside cut by dramatic valleys and gorges.
Buffalo’s weather is moderated by the lake, which cools it in the summer and warms it in the winter. The lake is also responsible for much of the snow – most of which falls in the hills south of the city – that gives the region its wintry reputation. For all of the good-natured bad press about winter in Buffalo, its relatively mild winter temperatures put it in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s growing zone 6, which means that you won’t get as cold in Buffalo as you will in Louisville, or St. Louis, or Pittsburgh, not to mention Minneapolis or Chicago!
Buffalo itself can get relatively little snow one year and a lot the next. When it does snow, the city digs out with surprising ease, thanks to a spirit of cooperation that makes Buffalo truly the City of Good Neighbors! Summers in Buffalo are, by measures of sunshine and temperature, the most pleasant in the Northeast. Fall in Buffalo is long, warm and colorful!!
Nearly every sports fan has heard of the Buffalo Bills, and hockey fans know the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo also has Triple A baseball in a 22,000-seat downtown ballpark. Professional indoor lacrosse is also popular in Buffalo.
There are few, if any, universities in this country that offer good skiing, great sailing, major league sports, a renowned orchestra, excellent professional theatre, a lively club scene, and another country all within minutes of its campus. In Buffalo, you can relax, play hard, and live comfortably while you pursue your graduate education.
