Cosmetic Science and Criminal Justice — New Master’s Offerings at Fairleigh Dickinson University

Classes are taught by FDU’s own accomplished professors and expert adjunct faculty who are actively employed within the cosmetic science industries.

Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Metropolitan Campus recently introduced two new graduate programs with inaugural classes that began in fall 2011. Both programs are offered through University College: ArtsSciencesProfessional Studies. Located in Teaneck, NJ, just eight miles from the heart of Manhattan, FDU’s Metropolitan Campus links students in both programs to New York City’s rich professional development opportunities, including internships, externships and research. Part-time and full-time options are available, making the programs especially attractive to working professionals who seek to advance without interrupting their career momentum.

Master of Science in Cosmetic Science
The only program of its kind in New Jersey, this subject was first introduced in 1982 as a concentration in cosmetic science under FDU’s M.S. in Science program. This new 32-credit graduate program was created with the support and approval of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists in response to the rising demand for cosmetic professionals in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.

Current and aspiring professionals will benefit from a program with a modern industry focus. Classes are taught by FDU’s own accomplished professors and expert adjunct faculty who are actively employed within the cosmetic science industries. The coursework offers advanced learning in the latest developments in the cosmetics, toiletries and fragrance industries. Students gain the essential training needed to launch a career in the cosmetic industry along with the enhanced skills needed for career advancement, including supervisory roles in the laboratory or plant and senior-level industry positions.

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree in an allied science (biology, chemistry, biochemistry or pharmacy) with a two-semester sequence of organic chemistry. The M.S. in Cosmetic Science program requires the completion of 20 credits of cosmetic science courses, six credits of cosmetic science electives, plus six credits of electives in management, marketing or communication.

  • Applied Colloid and Surface Science
  • Product Development
  • Microtoxicity and Biochemistry
  • Dermal Pharmacology and Immunology

Cosmetic Science electives include Perfumery, Color Cosmetics, Claims Substantiation, Biochemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Bioethics.

The program is also available as a combined degree, allowing students to earn a B.S. in chemistry and M.S. in Cosmetic Science in five years.

Master of Arts in Criminal Justice
This new program, which features special tuition pricing, was launched in response to the growing demand for highly skilled criminal justice professionals both nationally and internationally. The M.A. in Criminal Justice is designed to enhance students’ skill sets and provide the credentials needed for career advancement in police and law enforcement, public policy, courts and corrections, law and justice, social service advocacy, and security administration. Graduate students also can use their M.A. in Criminal Justice degree to prepare for law school and doctoral degree studies.

Offered through FDU’s School of Criminal Justice & Legal Studies, the program is taught by faculty who understand the skills needed for a successful career in criminal justice. Students benefit from studying with connected and expert faculty members with outstanding professional credentials who bring their real world experiences into the classroom.

The M.A. in Criminal Justice program includes engaging and challenging courses that bridge theory and practice, providing students with advanced knowledge and understanding of the U.S. criminal justice system, criminological theory, public policy, social research and methods of analysis. It trains students to be critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, respected decision-makers and leaders, and effective communicators. It also prepares students for advancement to supervisory and leadership positions.
Students have opportunities for real-word learning opportunities through FDU’s graduate-level internship program with more than 115 partners at criminal justice agencies, non-profit and private organizations at the federal, state and local levels. Through their coursework, students also have the opportunity to incorporate study abroad at Wroxton College — owned and operated by Fairleigh Dickinson University in Oxfordshire, England — and other locations in the United Kingdom. This professional development seminar features lectures from prominent British leaders in academia, the media, government, and the private sector.

The 36-credit program includes the following courses:
  • Professional Seminar in Criminal Justice
