Online Evaluation Enhances Your Graduate Application

You may have graduated college with a solid 3.0 average, held leadership positions in campus clubs, engaged in community service, and secured a prestigious internship. You are confident that this should be enough to secure your acceptance to the graduate school of your choice. But while your undergraduate college is considered competitive, and your GRE scores are acceptable, you wonder if there is anything else that will make you stand out among the hundreds of other applicants to your first choice school.

The Personal Potential Index (PPI), a Web-based program for evaluating the personal attributes of graduate and professional school applicants, is now available though Educational Testing Service (ETS). The PPI allows you to solicit online evaluations from professors or supervisors, then compiles and rates the responses on a scale of 1–5 for six key attributes deemed necessary for success in graduate and professional school programs. Applicants receive rankings in Knowledge and Creativity, Communication Skills, Teamwork, Resilience, Planning and Organization, and Ethics and Integrity.

For students who feel that their Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores do not accurately represent their knowledge base or their potential to do graduate level work, the PPI provides additional leverage to the application process. By combining evaluator comments with computer tabulated rankings, the PPI creates a balanced picture of the applicant, more insightful than information gleaned from GRE scores or college transcripts alone.

Before creating a PPI account, applicants should ask faculty and supervisory personnel if they would be willing to submit an evaluation. After receiving confirmations, the student logs onto the ETS PPI system, creates an account, and provides the evaluators’ contact information. ETS then contacts the evaluators who complete the questionnaire online by providing numerical rating in six categories. They also have the option of submitting personal comments. Applicants may review the evaluators’ questionnaires and select up to five evaluations to be included in the report and the schools to which the PPI will be sent. An applicant who has taken the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test on or after May 1, 2009, is entitled to four PPI reports for free. Additional reports are available for $20 each. Other applicants can create reports for $20 per report.
