In order to be competitive for the top graduate schools, you must start preparing early. In fact, the earlier you start, the better. Although many variables come into play, your grades and academic experiences will form the cornerstone of your application. Keep this in mind from the outset and you're bound to have an easier time with the application process.
Of course, many of us decide to pursue graduate training well after our college days are behind us. At that point, there is little to be done about grades and classes. Thankfully, however, all is not lost. There are still tests, essays, applications, and letters to keep you in the game.
Each piece of your application will take time to develop and you should give yourself ample time to prepare. Learn about which tests are required for admission and take a practice test as soon as possible. You'll want to see how you score and how it stacks up at the top graduate schools. If necessary, consider taking a test prep course or using a self-guided prep strategy. You'll also want to devote ample time to your essays, as they are the forum for you to shine as an individual. Never send a first draft, and always seek out examples from students in similar programs. Finally, take the time to contact faculty at potential schools. It may seem like a bold move, but if you can foster a relationship with someone on the inside, you stand a much better chance of surviving the application process for top schools.
