Western New England College Opens Center for the Sciences and Pharmacy
SPRINGFIELD, MA
Western New England College will hold a grand opening for a new $40 million academic building on Tuesday, December 14 at 11:30 a.m. The new Western New England College Center for the Sciences and Pharmacy will provide state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories for the College's programs in biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, and pharmacy.
During the grand opening, students, faculty, and staff will join with College President Anthony S. Caprio, members of the Board of Trustees, elected officials, and business leaders to celebrate the new building's impact on the campus and the region. There will be a brief speaking program and ribbon cutting ceremony in the building's atrium, followed by tours and a "World of Science Tomorrow" Showcase.
The Center was designed with input from Western New England faculty to meet the needs of students today and for years to come. "In higher education today, and especially here at Western New England, we believe it is not only important to provide the latest facilities for learning, it is also important to continue to provide the latest knowledge for the leaders of tomorrow," said Jerry Hirsch, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

Constructed over the past 15 months along Wilbraham Road, the Center for the Sciences and Pharmacy represents the most ambitious building project in Western New England's 91-year history. The building features 126,000 square feet spread over four floors, providing space for undergraduate education, doctoral research, and the College's new School of Pharmacy. The Center will also be home to the Western New England's Health Services facilities and a model pharmacy.
The new building was constructed with sustainability in mind, and is projected to use half as much energy as a conventional building of the same size. Environmentally-friendly features include the use of solar panels on the roof to provide hot water, chilled beam heating and air conditioning technology, zoned heating and cooling, motion sensor lighting, and high efficiency fixtures.

Fontaine Brothers of Springfield served as construction manager on the building, while Tessier Associates of Springfield provided architectural services. Financing for the project has been secured through a consortium of local banks.
